The pandemic revolutionized how we work. In Uganda, the COVID-19 lockdown compelled employers to implement remote work. Cloud computing offers the necessary infrastructure and tools to support this transition, providing computing services such as storage, processing power, and applications via the internet.
Why You Need Cloud Services
Businesses can eliminate the need for on-premises hardware, reduce costs, and scale their operations by utilizing cloud technologies. Moreover, cloud services replace the long-term maintenance required for physical servers with flexible, on-demand computing resources. These advantages are available to businesses of all sizes and types.

Choosing a cloud deployment model and service model is a crucial step in adopting cloud technology. There are three primary types of cloud deployment models that provide cloud computing services: public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud. The type of cloud deployment and service model you select will depend on your existing IT investments, your business requirements, and the goals you aim to achieve. It is important to understand the advantages and limitations of each type of cloud computing, as they will significantly impact your business.
Public Cloud
A public cloud delivers resources such as servers, storage, and applications over the internet. Also called external cloud, public clouds are an open model run by third-party cloud service providers like Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft Azure. The infrastructure and platform services are shared among multiple users and provided to the client based on a service-level agreement.
The primary benefit of public cloud deployments is access to cost-effective, highly scalable and flexible computing resources. Organisations are neither bound by any geographical restrictions nor do they have to invest in and maintain physical data center infrastructure. However, public cloud users have limited configuration controllability and autonomy over servers. The shared nature of the cloud also increases the potential security risks in shared environments.
Private cloud
Unlike public clouds, private clouds incur costs and resource limitations similar to those of traditional IT environments. They are built, operated, and used exclusively by a single organization. A private cloud is hosted entirely within the organisation’s own data center and managed by its internal IT team, giving the organisation complete control over its private cloud hardware, software, and data. This model is particularly suitable for organizations with specific performance or strict compliance needs.
Private cloud eliminate trust issues associated with the public cloud. Organizations can implement their own privacy, security, and access mechanism policies. They do not have to share infrastructure with other organizations and have greater control over configurations and software. However, the private cloud model is more expensive to set up and maintain. It requires substantial upfront capital investments in hardware, software, and other IT resources as well as higher operational costs, such as power, licensing, and maintenance.
Hybrid Cloud: Best of Both Worlds
A hybrid cloud allows businesses to leverage the advantages of both public and private cloud environments. It combines public cloud infrastructure with private cloud or on-premises infrastructure. This model enables you to utilize resources and services from different computing environments and choose the computing model that best fits your organisation’s needs.

Hybrid clouds are flexible. Organisations can run sensitive workloads in private clouds while handling less critical operations in public clouds. This approach is cost-efficient and enhances performance. Popular hybrid clouds include IBM Hybrid Cloud and Google Anthos.
In a Nutshell
In conclusion, the shift to cloud computing has fundamentally transformed the way businesses operate. With various deployment models available organizations have the flexibility to select a solution that best aligns with their unique needs, budget, and compliance requirements.
